Mumbai is Maharashtra’s capital and India’s most recognisable coastal metropolis, built across islands and shaped by trade, migration, cinema and the Arabian Sea. The Gateway of India, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, Marine Drive, Elephanta Caves and the historic Fort precinct form its classic visitor circuit, but the city’s character is equally present in local trains, markets, fishing villages, art districts and neighbourhood food. Mumbai rewards focused exploration rather than a rushed checklist. South Mumbai offers concentrated heritage, while Bandra and other suburbs reveal contemporary culture and nightlife. It is also the principal gateway to the Konkan coast, western Maharashtra and many major destinations across India.
